Starting a blog can be a daunting task if you’re not sure where to begin. There are so many options that it’s hard to know which one is the best. Lucky for you, I’m going to break it down step by step how to start a WordPress blog on SiteGround!
Why Should You Self-Host
Before we get started with instructions, you need to know why it is important to self-host versus blogging through a site like Weebly or Wix. First of all, when you blog using those services, your blog doesn’t really belong to you. You don’t have the flexibility to do all the things you want to and if they decide to take down your blog overnight there isn’t much you can do about it. Self-hosting means that you own everything on and about your blog. It is a well-known fact that self-hosted blogs also are easier to monetize because you have no limitations. You can install whatever plugins or coding you see fit which opens up a lot more opportunities. Trust me, if you want to earn an income from your blog then there is no better option.
Why WordPress.org and SiteGround
I’m sure you’ve heard of WordPress but why should you choose WordPress.org over WordPress.com? WordPress.com is another one of those free hosting sites where you don’t actually own your blog. WordPress.org however, gives you the tools to publish your site while still giving you complete control over your blog.
There are many hosts that you could choose from but based on my personal research and experience, SiteGround is the clear winner in this category. I have compared against several other options including Bluehost but after researching it is evident that SiteGround is superior when it comes to support and the fact that they rarely ever have downtime. They are also one of the cheapest options and you can get an awesome deal if you choose to use my affiliate link! Click here when you’re ready to sign up! I recommend you get the most basic plan which is only $3.95 per month!
Getting Started with SiteGround
Once you’ve gone to the SiteGround website, click on the “Web Hosting” option and you’ll find an image just like the one above. The most basic plan (StartUp) is all you will need as a new blogger! You may want to consider upgrading as your blog grows and SiteGround makes that easy to do. Next you’ll want to pick out your domain. I hope you’ve had some time to think about this! You can use yourname.com or something clever you’ve come up with but this is going to be part of your brand so consider it carefully!
SiteGround has a couple more options you can choose to add on. I chose to also use their domain privacy option. Any time you set up a site, your information is made public unless you choose to keep it private. I’ve made this mistake before. I received so many phone calls from random numbers that I chose to keep my information private this time.
Next you’ll want to install WordPress which you can access under your “My Account” tab and clicking on “Go to cPanel.” Scroll down a little and you’ll find the WordPress Installer icon. Click that and follow the prompts! I think it’s so convenient that SiteGround guides you through the whole process.
That’s it! You’re ready to start blogging. Access your blog by going to www.yourblog.com/wp-admin and use your login credentials that you set up earlier! Now you can enjoy doing the fun stuff like picking a theme and writing posts! I hope I have given you enough info to start a WordPress blog on SiteGround. If you have any questions please leave them in the comments!
